Kayden

“This is bullshit, you know.” I slouched in my agent’s chair while he didn’t even try to look as if I wasn’t totally pissing on his schedule by showing up here without warning or an appointment. But there was no way he didn’t know about my forced merriment or suspect I’d show up.

There were people all over my space for the second day in a row. I hated it. Not just disliked. I hated it. Literally, I was annoyed enough to book a flight to the Maldives and not come back until spring—late spring so I missed any forced Easter parties. Ugh, but then there would be all the summer festivities. I should just go find a desert island. But make Clover come with me.

Gavin steepled his fingers, resting his elbows on his arm rests while he took me in with a bland expression. “Tell me all about how terrible your privilege is. How was the party at my in-laws’ place? Blake wasn’t feeling well, or we would have been there.”

Right. I forgot he was related to Ross Sterling through Ross’s daughter.

“It was fine. I should fire you.”

“Go ahead. I’m terrified.”

I glared at him. He wasn’t the tiniest bit fazed, probably because his whole client roster was at the same high level as me.

“I never took you as a whiner, Kayden. I’m sure you’ve locked yourself in your studio and let Ivar deal with all the crew decorating your house.”

“Of course, I did.”

Gavin rolled his eyes, entirely over my tantrum. And yes, I knew I was being a whiny baby, and it was out of character for me. I was the guy who did concerts in mud swells and rain storms and didn’t complain. I was the guy who acted as the cheerleader for all our crew and band when we were doing out seventh concert in six days. This Christmas crap, though. Give me strength.

“You know it’s all about the money and exposure, right? They wouldn’t have fired you. You’re a cash cow. Hell, you could have an orgy in front of the Hollywood sign, and they’d probably spin it for revenue.” Gavin pointed at me. “Don’t do it.”

“As if I’d do anything like that. Geez. You know me better than that. Are you telling me I don’t have to do all this shit?”

Even as I asked it, I knew it didn’t matter what he said in response. I would never ruin all of the hard work Clover had already put into my event. She’d been busting her ass, and she was a certifiable miracle worker. And most of all, I cared about her—I always had, but the more we were together while she helped me, the more I realized my feelings had always been true. I wasn’t ready to say the L-word—hell, that would probably scare her—but I was pretty damn close.

“No,” Gavin replied, shaking his head. “I already dealt with Poppins. You should have more faith in me.”

I should have known my agent would have been on the phone with my label over this BS.
